Ant Group invests millions in Tianji Intelligent, taking a lightweight 1.66% stake to explore industrial robots and seize a hardware entry point into the physical world.

When the name of Ant Group, the fintech and mobile payments giant, quietly appeared on the shareholder roster of a Dongguan industrial robotics company, this seemingly minor slice of capital exposed the deep hunger of big software companies for hardware entry points into the physical world under the large-model wave.
Shanghai Yunyang, an investment entity wholly owned by Ant Group, contributed capital to join Guangdong Tianji Intelligent System Co., Ltd., securing approximately 1.66% equity after the latter's capital increase. For Ant, valued in the hundreds of billions, this amounts to no more than a tens-of-millions-yuan injection, not even worthy of being called a formal strategic acquisition. But if the perspective is widened to pierce through the technological inflection point where industrial robots are moving from traditional teaching to intelligent autonomous operation, it becomes clear that internet giants are using extremely low financial leverage to seize a foothold in the highly closed underbelly of manufacturing.
Tianji Intelligent: An Industrial Robotics Veteran with Apple Supply Chain Genes
As the core target of this transaction, Tianji Intelligent is not a newly emerged venture capital project out of nowhere. Tracing the corporate history recorded by Tianyancha, the company's registered capital was recently expanded from approximately 224 million yuan to approximately 244 million yuan. The largest shareholder, holding nearly 20%, is Changying Precision, a giant in Apple supply chain structural components. Having early origins in consumer electronics precision manufacturing and traditional industrial robotic arm technology cooperation, Tianji Intelligent carries the purest 3C production line automation genes at its core, with its main shipments concentrated in high-speed SCARA manipulators, small six-axis industrial robots, and intelligent production line integration.
With hardware veterans like Changying Precision seated as major shareholders, Tianji Intelligent is guaranteed first-hand orders and engineering data in extremely demanding industrial settings such as precision grinding and mobile phone structural component assembly.
The Upward Path for Industrial Robots: From Robotic Arms to Intelligent Brains
However, the commercial story of traditional industrial robotic arms has long since reached its midpoint. Over the past few years, domestic industrial robots rapidly completed mid-to-low-end substitution through price competition, but the limitations of lacking perception and decision-making capabilities and relying on manual precision programming have driven hardware gross margins steadily downward. To shed the low-value-added contract manufacturing label, the only upward path for industrial robots is to install an intelligent brain on the cold robotic arm that can understand part positions and autonomously plan operation paths.
This is precisely the physical chasm that Ant must cross.
From Alipay's financial services to Ant's heavy bets in general large models and on-device assistants, this tech giant has already polished its algorithmic models to an enormous scale in the digital world, but digital algorithms remain suspended behind virtual screens. As global tech giants race to push deeper into embodied intelligence and industrial intelligence, whoever can first push multimodal models down to real factory floors and command robotic arms to complete millisecond-level assembly will be the one to establish a new distribution tax in the physical industrial economy.
The Restraint of 1.66%: The Logic of Lightweight Equity Penetration
However, a shareholding ratio of only 1.66% also reflects the extremely rational financial restraint of Ant's management.
The trial-and-error costs of industrial manufacturing are extremely high. An internet company that started out in algorithm distribution rashly taking a large controlling stake in a heavy-asset hardware factory would not only face cumbersome production line depreciation and lengthy payment cycles, but would more easily get bogged down in complex factory engineering problems. Through lightweight equity penetration at the tens-of-millions-yuan level, Ant does not need to backstop the factory's daily profits and losses, yet as a shareholder it can obtain Tianji Intelligent's equipment parameters, motion control feedback, and massive manufacturing data from real industrial scenarios.
This exploratory investment is essentially a privileged ticket acquired at extremely low cost to lock in STEM scenarios and hardware deployment validation.
Track Direction: The Convergence of Algorithm Giants and Hardware Manufacturers
This miniature capital injection in early autumn points the way for the entire industrial intelligence track: algorithm giants are no longer fixated on building robotic arms from scratch, but are turning to using capital to connect with mature production line hardware allies; and industrial robot manufacturers mired in red-ocean competition also urgently need the加持 of top-tier algorithms to achieve product premium breakthroughs.
